What is the Best Flavor of Hi-Chew?

What is the Best Flavor of Hi-Chew?

Hi-Chew is a Japanese taffy-like candy similar to starbursts. They have 131 flavors and flavor combinations. I tried 14 flavors with my family; we gave them a grade out of 10, and a few notes about the flavor of the candy itself.

I’ll describe the flavors by column, from top to bottom and left to right.

First up is Cola. My family agreed it had a definite cola flavor, and the flavor intensified as you chewed. This flavor got a 7/10 rating.

Next is the strawberry flavor. We thought this one tastes like a bad starburst, because the flavor was weak and it had a bad aftertaste. This flavor got a 2/10 rating.

The watermelon flavor was more of a hit; it was slightly sour and had the classic artificial watermelon flavor. This got a rating of 7/10.

The last flavor in the column was mango. This was my personal favorite before we started this taste test, but the rest of my family hated it saying it tasted rotten. This got an average of 4/10.

The orange flavor was pretty good- it had a nice citrusy flavor, but the waxiness of the texture detracted from the candy. It got an average of 6/10.

After orange was the lemon flavor. It had a nice lemon flavor and it was less waxy then some of the previous candies. Lemon got an average of 7/10.

Next was pineapple. This was not a good flavor. There was too strong of a pineapple flavor, and it was extremely artificial. Pineapple got an average of 2/10.

Lastly in the column was kiwi. There was no kiwi flavor, but rather an indistinguishable artificial flavor that was generic. It got an average of 2/10.

The green apple flavor had an ok apple taste, but we all agreed we wished it had some sort of tartness. All these candies are very sweet, so tart flavors are better than non tart ones. Green apple got an average of 5/10.

The Ramune flavor was one of the worst candies I have ever eaten. It tasted nothing like the soda. Instead, it tasted very strongly of cleaning products. I would never get this one. Ramune was rated 1/10.

Next was açai. It was not too sweet and it had a pleasant tropical-berry flavor. We rated this 8/10.

The final flavor in the column was grape. I also personally like this flavor. The consensus was that this tasted like the classic artificial grape flavor. It was rated unanimously 7/10.

The grapefruit flavor was something I hadn’t had before, but I was pleasantly surprised with its tart taste and subtle grapefruit flavor. This was rated 8/10.

The last flavor we tried was Dragon Fruit. For those of you have tasted dragon fruit before, this has no resemblance. This flavor should be called sweet because that is all we tasted. We rated dragon fruit 2/10.

All in all, Hi-Chew candies are good if you know which flavors to stick to. The winners in my family’s taste test were açai and grapefruit. Not far behind these were the cola, watermelon, orange, and grape flavors. The worst was Ramune. My favorite Hi-Chew is the grapefruit flavor.
